How to cut a watermelon – it doesn’t get much easier than this 3 ways

Ah, the difficult task of cutting a watermelon and not making it look like a fruit of mass destruction!

There are several ways to cut a watermelon. Some are simple yet clever, others are quite original, and a few are the genius of slicing techniques.

From the simpler to the most brilliant, here are the cutting techniques that make cutting watermelon a worthwhile accomplishment. Learn them, memorize them, practice them, and you’ll be cutting watermelons for the sake of cutting watermelons in no time.

Who knows, you might even discover you have artsy skills of watermelon carving.

  1. Cutting into slices
    • Remove the top and bottom of the watermelon, slicing them off with a serrated knife that should preferably be longer than the fruit.
    • Place the watermelon on a cutting board and slice in half through the middle.
    • Cut each slice in half again to obtain four sections which you’ll have to work with one by one.
    • Holding one end of a watermelon piece with your hand, slice from just above the rind to cut the flesh away.
    • Now just cut each piece from the peak to the rind into pieces as small or big as you prefer.
  1. Cutting into cubes or bite-sized pieces
    • Have a watermelon sitting on a larger cutting board, either a whole watermelon, a half, or a quarter.

2.2. If starting with a whole watermelon, cut in half lengthwise, and then each half in half again. So now you have 4 watermelon quarters that you’ll have to work with one at a time.

1.3. Cut across the melon making slices 1 to 2 inches wide until above the white rind, making sure you don’t cut through the bottom.

1.4. Now slice lengthwise starting an inch below the top of the watermelon. Depending on how big the watermelon, you’ll have to repeat this process a couple of times.

1.5. Next – turn the watermelon around and repeat 1.4.

1.6. Keep the watermelon above a large bowl and slice between the flesh and rind, pouring the cubes in the bowl.

  1. Cutting with a melon baller

3.1. Cut the watermelon into halves, and then each piece in half again, either lengthwise or crosswise.

3.2. With a melon baller scoop out watermelon flesh and place pieces into a bowl.

You can use an ice cream scoop if you don’t have a melon baller and it will work just as fine too. The melon baller method is probably the easiest way to eat watermelon if you prefer smaller bits and less hassle.

Applying this method will give you wonderful melon balls that you can serve chilled as a refreshing treat at any time of day.

It’s also best if you use seedless watermelons with this method, so you don’t have to scoop out the seeds yourself. And if you want to make a truly rewarding dessert or treat, indulge with a little bit of ice cream.
