Shopping at Aldi Australia really brushes up on your money savings

In 2009, Australian consumer organization Choice nominated Aldi as the cheapest grocery store in the country.

Six years later, the same organization found that Aldi was still the cheapest and that “by foregoing leading brands you can save about 50% off your grocery bill by shopping at Aldi.”

They compared the average price of a grocery basket from various retailers and found that “a basket of leading brand products cost $87.29 more at Coles and $89.09 more at Woolworths than a basket of equivalent products from Aldi.”

How Aldi can afford to provide low cost quality products

German discount store Aldi undertakes a number of strategies in order to keep prices as low as possible and offer customers best value for your money.

  • Aldi sells mostly private label brand items.

Unlike other major retailers that may be stocking up to thousands of name brands on their shelves, Aldi only carries a few name brands and a more selective variety of name brands goods. Instead, the supermarket carries one of the biggest private label brand selections.

  • Aldi doesn’t hire employees to retrieve trolleys.

Customers who shop at Aldi Aus know that in order to release a trolley at Aldi you have to insert a coin and return the trolley to the trolley bay to receive the coin back. Thus, the store doesn’t have to hire more employees to do the work, but it encourages customers to get involved.

  • Aldi runs smaller stores.

With supermarkets, the bigger the store selection, the more costs are involved. It costs supermarkets more to handle accounting for merchandise; it costs more to manage supplier relationships and so on. In addition, the size of a store determines the price for rent, so Aldi saves with lower rent by stocking a more limited selection of products and by minimizing store size as well.

  • Aldi has fewer emplo

Because it runs a very efficient business model, Aldi can afford to hire only two, maybe three employees for an entire store. The supermarket has its store boxes designated specifically for their shops, to make it easier to stock products. Items can have up to five barcodes to help employees at checkout scan faster, and they only switch out prices for items, not the signs. Everything adds up to a highly efficient business model that saves the supermarket money.

Aldi Aus Must-Buys

Between the store’s selection of fresh foods, breads and meats there are a number of items that customers can find even more appealing than at other supermarkets. For example, Aldi Aus sources various products locally, including milk and produce.

In addition, some vegetables and fruits can cost up to $50 less at Aldi. Tomatoes, grapes, apples, celery potatoes are among must-buys in the produce category at Aldi Aus, while chicken, ground turkey and steak are the most popular choices in the meat category.

Aldi Australia Special Buys

Among the everyday range of products and bargains to be found at the notorious German store is also the Aldi Aus Special Buys range of items that usually include electronics, furniture and clothing. Special buys come out Wednesdays and Saturdays at Aldi on a limited stock.

The special promotions can be browsed online, and the supermarket sends them via email to subscribers too. The range of Special Buys items that Aldi promotes is usually geared around various seasons and holidays, meaning that customers will find spring related products in springtime, Christmas related products in winter, Halloween items in October and so on.
